NZBusiness Magazine talk – Growth & Resilience

NZBusiness Magazine talk – Growth & Resilience

Last Thursday I got the opportunity to speak at Icehouse for NZBusiness Magazine about Growth & Resilience.

Here is what I learnt from the other 3 panelists Lisa Turnbull, John Berry & Aaron Smith:

1. AI is a solution looking for a problem. It is useful if you have a large issue that can be solved with AI, it is a distraction if you are trying to find a problem for it to solve.

2. Growing a business is like pushing a fridge across the kitchen floor. The first bit (getting it moving) is massively, incredibly hard, taking huge amounts of energy. Once you have momentum it’s easier.

3. The market won’t wait for you to be ready to go, sometimes you have to say yes before you are ready, and sometimes you have to say no to a good (but not great) opportunity.

For me, I see a key to SME growth to lie with the owner.

You must have a clear mind & the energy to execute.
To do that focus on two things:

1. Get off your bloody phone, and stop scrolling Instagram/LinkedIn/YouTube. These platforms cloud your judgment.

2. Prioritise your sleep more. Sorry, you can’t operate on less than 6 hours of sleep.

Surprisingly hard, but effective ways to help you grow.
